Some apple varieties suitable for Northern England

Apple trees require a pollinator from a different apple tree in the same or adjacent group. Most apple trees are diploid. A few are triploid and these are poor pollinators.

Ashmead's Kernel

Pollination group 4. Pick mid October. Use December-February.
Dessert apple originated in Gloucestershire. White flesh. Firm and juicy. Sweet/sharp flavour.

Court of Wick

Pollination group 3. Pick end September. Use September-December.
Fruity dessert apple raised in Somerset. Hardy and tolerant of strong winds.

Dumelow's Seedling

Pollination group 4. Pick mid October. Use October-April.
This was a popular cooking apple before Bramley's dominated the market place. It is a very fine acidic apple not unlike a Bramley. Small fruit.

Golden Pippin

Pollination group 4. Pick mid October. Use October-February.
Old English dessert apple with a rich, sweet taste.

Irish Peach

Pollination group 2. Pick August. Use August.
One of the earliest dessert apples with a rich flavour. Eat from the tree.

Keswick Codlin'

Pollination group 2. Pick September-October. 
Use September-November.
Cooking apple that cooks to a froth.

Margil

Pollination group 3. Pick Early October. 
Use October-December.

Possibly French in origin. Firm, sweet and rich dessert apple. Heavy cropping.

Mrs Lakeman's Seedling

The Northumberland apple. Dual purpose. Tastes average cooked or raw.

Nancy Jackson

Pollination group 4. Pick mid October. Use November-March.
Another fine cooking apple that improves with keeping. Originated in the North Riding of Yorkshire.

Pitmaston Pineapple

Pollination group 4. Pick early October. Use October-December.
A small yellow dessert apple sometimes bursting with the flavours of pineapple and honey.

Ribston Pippin

Pollination group 3. Triploid. Pick Early October. Use October-January.
The famous Ribston Pippin originated at Knaresborough Hall in Yorkshire. Grown from an apple pip from France. Dessert apple with complex flavour. Vigorous tree. Prone to drop fruit early.

Sykehouse Russet

Pollination group? Pick mid October. Use October-December.
A rare apple from Sykehouse near Doncaster. Gradually sweetens in storage.

Yorkshire Greening

Pollination group 3. Pick mid October. Use December-March.
Acidic cooking apple.
